Prehospital Care Specialist

The Pre-Hospital Care Specialist (PHCS) is accountable for (in conjunction with the Regional Base Hospital Leaders and Medical Directors) developing, facilitating and delivering educational opportunities for paramedics in Southwestern Ontario. This would also include the certification of new paramedics and continuing medical education for a broad range of practice competencies and medical directives. Using a just culture approach, looking at a standardized process with established benchmarks and analysis of paramedic patient care activities; the PHCS assures patient safety by evaluating performance and monitoring compliance with standards. With educational, operational and clinical expertise, the PHCS is a professional role model and resource for paramedics of all levels.

Bio: Melissa joined SWORBHP in August 2017 as a full-time Prehospital Care Specialist. Prior to joining SWORBHP Melissa worked as a Clinical Educator for the Northwest Region Base Hospital Program since September 2009. She completed the Primary Care Paramedic Program at Confederation College in 2004. Melissa is a Nationally Certified EMS Educator with the National EMS Certification Board, and holds a Nationally Certified Investigations and Inspectors certificate through the Council of Licensure, Enforcement & Regulation. She is currently working on her Bachelors of Integrated Studies with a minor in Adult Educations from the University of New Brunswick.
