Question:

For Oxytocin administration, can you please clarify if the placenta has to be out prior to. Or can the patient have Placenta in and us administer Oxytocin as long as baby is out?

Answer:

Oxytocin may given before the placenta is delivered, as long as there are no further fetuses yet to be delivered. The Contraindications of the Medical Directive help highlight this, with one of the Contraindication for Oxytocin being “Undelivered fetus”. Therefore, in the majority of deliveries, you can give oxytocin after delivery of the singleton fetus before the placenta is delivered. However, in the case of a multiple birth, you withhold Oxytocin until the last fetus is delivered.
