Learning to speak the medical language is important for accurate communication with other healthcare professionals. However, using medical terminology when communicating with a patient may lead to obtaining inaccurate or incomplete information (especially past medical history). Try re-wording and simplifying your question(s) to patients. This may provoke a better understanding and different response. For example, try using terminology that may be more familiar to the patient: Instead of asking if they have high blood pressure, ask if they have been told they have high blood pressure, or if they take medication for their blood pressure. Using more simple terms, or rephrasing the question allows for another channel to understanding.
