Question:

Question: Patient is unconscious respirations of 8 but DNR is present. We can't assist respirations using a BVM? Sorry if this question had already been asked / answered.

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Yes, this answer has been posted previously on the site. The DNR standard clearly indicates that a paramedic will not insert an oropharyngeal or nasopharyngeal airway or perform artificial ventilation to any patient with a completed and valid DNR confirmation form. As such, the patient should not be ventilated by a BVM.

A copy of the Standard can be found on our website here: www.lhsc.on.ca/About_Us/Base_Hospital_Program/No.108V.1.0DNRStandard.pdf
