Question:
What is a closed suctioning system?
Answer:
Services that carry closed suction systems can perform suctioning of ETTs and tracheostomies.
An open suction system is a system whereby a suction catheter can be introduced by disconnecting the patient from the ventilator or manual bagging.
A closed suction system is system whereby a suction catheter is contained within the ventilatory circuit and does not require the need to "open" the ventilation circuit in order to suction. Closed suctioning systems allows for suctioning without disconnecting the patient from the ventilation source.
A video demonstrating one type of closed suction system can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuXbfkeFNx8
Please ask your Service Leaders if you are unsure if your Paramedic Service carries a closed suction system.
