Question:

Question: I was wondering if in the instance of a patient cutting their wrists, becoming hypovolemic and then going VSA if this should be treated as a medical arrest or a traumatic. Thank you in advance.

Answer:

Thanks for submitting this interesting question. The patient you described has suffered self-inflicted penetrating trauma resulting in hemorrhagic shock and then death. We suggest treating the patient as a penetrating trauma. Fortunately in this scenario if you achieve ROSC you would be able to apply pressure to the sites and avoid further blood loss. Asis the case with all VSA patients, if you believe that trauma is the source of the patient being in cardiac arrest, then treat as a traumatic arrest.
