Overview

New Certification is the process by which the SWORBHP Medical Director provides authorization to perform controlled acts and advanced medical procedures to new Primary Care Paramedics (PCP) or Advanced Care Paramedics (ACP). Paramedic candidates with a conditional offer of employment or who are employed by an Employer are required to attain Base Hospital certification prior to performing controlled acts and/or other advanced medical procedures listed in the Advanced Life Support Patient Care Standards (ALS PCS).

New Certification is the process for providing new SWORBHP Medical Director authorization to perform controlled acts and advanced medical procedures as a Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) or an Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP). Paramedic candidates with a conditional offer of employment or employed by an Employer are required to attain Base Hospital certification prior to performing patient care and/or controlled acts and/or other advanced medical procedures listed in the Advanced Life Support Patient Care Standards (ALS PCS).

Once a candidate is successful, their new certification shall be portable amongst all eight (8) Ontario Regional Base Hospital Program jurisdictions providing the Paramedic has no outstanding patient care concerns and maintains their certification. Failure to comply with all aspects of this procedure may result in revocation of the SWORBHP authorization to perform controlled acts through deactivation and/or decertification at the discretion of the Medical Director.

The following is our process for requesting new certification:

The following is the procedure that we follow with regards to New Certifications at SWORBHP.

Step 1

The Service shall notify SWORBHP of the newly hired Paramedic(s) by submitting the Paramedic candidate name(s) into the Paramedic Portal of Ontario (PPO) at least ten (10) business days prior to the requested training dates (orientation and testing).

The Employer shall also attest, at the time of submission into the PPO, that the Paramedic candidate(s) meet all qualifications for employment as a Paramedic (Ontario Reg 257/00).

Step 2

SWORBHP will complete a gap analysis on the training requirements for each Paramedic candidate and provide the results to the Employer. The new certification training is at the discretion of the Medical Director.

If a Paramedic candidate is currently or has been certified with another Regional Base Hospital (RBH) in Ontario within the last 10 years, then the candidate must follow our SWORBHP Cross Certification policy and complete the cross certification form.

Step 3

The Employer shall schedule the Paramedic candidate(s) into the training session(s) within the PPO. A link to our new certification training calendar is available above. Please note that the orientation is a pre-requisite for attending the testing.

Step 4

SWORBHP shall provide the Paramedic candidate(s) and Employer an email outlining the training details and precourse requirements. Successful completion of all precourse requirements must be completed prior to attending the new certification training.

Step 5

New certification training for a Paramedic candidate may include, but not be limited to:

  • A review of all core medical directives for the level the Paramedic candidate is seeking certification and authorization for.
  • An introduction to the SWORBHP policies applicable to the Paramedic and an overview of the SWORBHP organization.
  • Training on auxiliary medical directives endorsed by the Employer for the level the Paramedic is seeking certification and authorization for.
  • Medical Director (or delegate) directed scenarios (i.e. simulation cases, oral cases).
  • Skills assessment.

Step 6

SWORBHP shall notify the Employer of the results upon completion of the training. Successful completion will result in certification and authorization to perform the specified advanced medical procedures (including controlled acts) which will be outlined on the Paramedic’s certification letter within the PPO.

Unsuccessful completion will be discussed with the Employer and may result in future testing in accordance with the New Certification policy.

Step 7

Paramedics who are newly certified must proceed to consolidation (36 hours for PCP and 168 hours for ACP) and will be required to adhere to the SWORBHP Consolidation policy before full new certification is granted.

Step 8

The Employer must notify SWORBHP once the Paramedic has completed their consolidation. Upon notification, the Paramedic certification will be updated in the PPO granting them full certification.
