Question:

Question: My question is concerning the 5ml vials of Gravol and Toradol that some services are now carrying. Should these be thrown out after opening and removing one dose? Or are we to keep them and use them again for another patient?

Answer:

Thank you for your question.  Paramedic services are able to set service specific protocols for reusing or not reusing multi-dose medication vials.  As with all medications proper rubber stopper cleaning procedures should be followed prior to delivering medication from a vial that has already had the cap removed.   However multi-dose vials are falling out of favour in the patient safety literature.  SWROBHP will follow up with services to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of multi dose vials.
