Question:

As far as the LAMS is concerned, when assessing grip strength, what is the score for a pt who has normal grip on one side only?

Answer:

The score is assessed comparing one side to the other.

So, if one side is weaker than the other (but can still grip), you would score this a one (1).  If there is no grip on the affected side, it is scored a two (2).

If, however, you mean that the patient has a previous deficit, then you would score the patient with your findings, but make sure to communicate the history of the deficit to the receiving stroke team.  Please see a similar Ask MAC on this very topic of previous deficit (here).
