Question:

Why should Lidocaine be administered before Xylometazoline?

Answer:

Xylocaine will dampen the gag before nasotracheal intubation. However, it does take some time to work (2-3 minutes to achieve analgesia). Therefore, it is advantageous to administer lidocaine before Xylometazoline.
