Question:

Do we still suction neonates immediately after birth?

Answer:

Per the Neonatal Resuscitation Medical Directive, you should not routinely suction the newly born who are term gestation with good muscle tone and are breathing or crying.  Should this not be the case, you initiate your Neonatal Resuscitation with 30 seconds of (1) provide warmth, and (2) position/clear airway (which may include suctioning if meconium with poor muscle tone and breathing/crying needs to be addressed).  Please see the OBHG Companion Document and ALS-PCS for full details.
