Question:

Is there a pharmacological benefit to administering dexamethasone PO vs IV/IM or is it the preferred route simply to avoid unnecessary sharp use?

Answer:

The oral route is preferred, when tolerated by the patient. The bioavailability (amount of drug available in the body) is similar and as such, avoids the need for a more invasive administration route. Note that the Croup Medical Directive solely utilizes PO administration.
