Question:
For a patient with 3rd degree burns - should we be using our service supplied burn gel/sheets? According to the BLS 3rd degree burns are to be covered with dry sterile dressings or a sheet but I have seen them being used on 3rd degree burns victims in the past. Could you clarify when we should be using these burn sheets? I can't find this information. Thank you in advance!
Answer:
SWORBHP Medical Council suggests following the BLS PCS and service provided training, when treating burns. For clarity, a third degree burn is a “full thickness” burn and involves all layers of the skin, often into the fat and muscle. Skin appears leathery. Second degree burns, or “partial thickness” burns, are where we see blistering of skin between the layers of the epidermis and subcutaneous tissue. Note that multiple types of burn can be present concurrently (example, same region can have second and third degree burns). With the time constraints of prehospital care, burns often occurring in low light conditions and contaminated with soot, it may be more practical to manage burns of various thicknesses with the use of burn management that covers all areas initially, until it can be further assessed during definitive care.
