Defib Pads in STEMI
Why apply defib pads for all STEMIs?
- Reported rates of ~5% of STEMIs diagnosed in the field go on to have OHCA
- VF/pVT is common
- Minimizing time to shock is advantageous (improves favourable neurologic survival)
Local study showed decreased time to shock in the setting of STEMI when pads were applied once STEMI was identified
- Average time to initial defibrillation was 17.7 seconds in the “pads-on protocol” patients, compared with 72.7 seconds in routine care patients.
Summary
Application of defib pads in STEMI, which has a known incidence of ~5% OHCA post Dx, allows for quicker defibrillation and likely favourable neurologic survival
Now you know the rationale for this treatment!
