Question:

Can you TOR someone who is in PEA

Answer:

Yes, a BHP can provide a TOR order when a patient is in PEA.

If a patient meets all Conditions of the Medical TOR, (following the 3rd analysis per the Mandatory Provincial Patch Point), a patch to the BHP can be made to consider TOR, with PEA as the arrest rhythm. The BHP will use the information provided to them and may ask further questions (for example; the rate and width of the PEA rhythm, distance to hospital etc.) to determine if the patient should be transported to hospital.

Under the Conditions of the Trauma TOR, a BHP patch can be made with a PEA rhythm (wording within the Medical Directive of Monitored HR >0) with the closest ED ‰¥30 min transport time away. Again, the BHP will use information surrounding the case to determine if the patient should be transported to hospital.
